A recent study published in a journal of the American Heart Association found that 1 in 44,000 NCAA athletes is a victim of sudden cardiac death each year. However, a Swedish researcher found that Division I athletes face a cardiac death risk of about 1 in 3,000.

Given that dogs have a lifespan about a sixth as long as humans and that more than 1,000 of them start the Iditarod every year, there would be a couple dead dogs every year if they faced a comparable mortality rate....

2 raccoons in DE test positive for rabies

Two rabid raccoons have been found – one in Frederica and one in Frankford.  The Division of Public Health says that the raccoons were tested after they came in contact with residents’ dogs – no humans were affected.  Health officials remind you that as the weather warms and we spend more time outside – our risk of exposure to rabid animals increases.  Any wild animal should be regarded as rabid and you should be sure your pets rabies vaccinations are up to date.   Last year there were 6 confirmed cases of rabies in Delaware.

The Liberty City Council approved the appointment of Janet Snook as the next director of the citys Parks and Recreation Department at its May 7 meeting.

Janet brings experience and expertise in strategically developing parks and recreation services and programs, said City Administrator Curt Wenson in a press release. She impressed us with her overall knowledge of the various facets of the parks and rec industry.
